Ghost Of Tsushima launched as a PlayStation exclusive and its Director’s Cut is now available for PC as part of Sony’s push into the PC market. There is no doubt about the game’s quality and it’s an optimized PC port from Nixxes. Despite that, PC users report errors, crashes, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG error, the Shader Model 6.6 support not detected error, and other issues with the game like the “Unable to create the save directory” error. I have compiled a list of fixes for Ghost of Tsushima that help PC users fix the Unable to create the save directory error crash.
Try These Ghost Of Tsushima Unable To Create Save Directory Fixes
PC users report Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut crashes at startup with Unable to create save directory error. The following is the full error message.
This is a common error for PC ports of almost all Sony-exclusive titles. Horizon Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, and more, all showcased this behaviour.
Ghost Of Tsushima PC is crashing with a save error due to multiple reasons like the Controlled Folder Access blocking it from accessing the Documents folder, you have enabled OneDrive backup, and more. The following fixes will help PC users fix Ghost Of Tsushima’s save error.
Run the Game as an Administrator
Ghost Of Tsushima is crashing at startup with the “Unable to create the save directory” error because it doesn’t have administrative rights. Run the game as an administrator to fix the error.
- Right-click Ghost Of Tsushima in your Steam library > Manage > Browse local files.
- A new Explorer window will open with game files.
- right-click Ghost Of Tsushima’s executable > properties > Compatibility tab.
- Check “Run this program as an administrator” and apply changes.
- Play Ghost Of Tsushima and the save game error is fixed.
Disable Ransomware Protection
Ransomware Protection is a Windows Security feature that protects your PC files and folders from harmful programs or malware. However, it also blocks some games from accessing the Documents folder, which displays the save game error while saving progress or crashes the game at startup with the save directory error. Ransomware Protection is crashing Ghost Of Tsushima with the “Unable to create the save directory” error and you can fix it by disabling the Ransomware Protection in Windows Security.
- Open Windows Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection.
- Click “Manage Ransomware Protection” under “Ransomware Protection”.
- Turn off “Controlled Folder Access”
- Play Ghost Of Tsushima and the save game error is fixed.
Disable OneDrive Backup
OneDrive is a useful tool to back up your files, but it often causes the save game error with video games. Most games store their save files in the Documents folder and OneDrive changes the path to it, which prevents games from accessing it and creating save files. If you have enabled OneDrive backup, it is crashing Ghost Of Tsushima with the “Unable to create the save directory” error. You can fix the error by disabling OneDrive backup.
- Right-click the OneDrive icon in the Taskbar
- Go to Settings > Sync and Backup > Manage Backup
- Turn off the backup for the Documents folder
- Click “Save Changes”
- Launch Ghost Of Tsushima and the “unable to create save directory” crash is fixed.
Change User Folder Path
You disabled the OneDrive backup and are still experiencing Ghost Of Tsushima’s “Unable to create the save directory” crash. That is because OneDrive changed the user path to folders like the Documents folder, and the game can’t create a save file. Change the paths to the user folders to their defaults to fix the error.
- Press the Windows + R buttons
- Type regedit and press Enter
- Windows Registry Editor will open up.
- Navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders” path.
- You will find the path to the Documents Folder is “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”.
- Right-click the file that has the “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents” path
- click on Modify
- Change the path to C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents and press Ok
- Change it for every file that has OneDrive in its path.
- Navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders” path in Registry Editor.
- Find the file named “Personal” and the path to the Documents folder will again be “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”.
- Modify the path to “C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents” and press OK.
- Launch Ghost Of Tsushima and the “Unable to create the save directory” crash is fixed.
