In-game crashes or crashes at startup are common among PC video games. V Rising is out of the Steam Early Acces. The development of the game is complete with player feedback. At this point in a game’s development, it’s a stable build. However, PC users report V Rising crashes, in-game or at startup. I have compiled a list of fixes that resolve the in-game crash and the crash at startup issue in V Rising. Also, see our fixes for the V Rising Prewarming Shaders Crash.
V Rising Crash Fixes You Can Try
PC users report V Rsing randomly crashes in-game or when they continue their game from the main menu. There are multiple reasons for the in-game crashes like in-game overlays, shader compilation issues, and more. The following fixes help resolve V Rising’s in-game crashes.
Update GPU Driver
The GPU driver installed on your Windows PC is corrupt or incompatible, which crashes V Rising while playing. Update or install a different GPU driver to fix the in-game crash. Ensure you do a clean installation so the setting from the previous install won’t interfere with the new one.
If your GPU driver is already up-to-date, reset the Nvidia Control Panel or AMD settings, depending on the GPU. This will fix V Rising’s in-game crash issue.
Disable Third-Party Tools or Software
Using third-party software in the background like MSI Afterburner, any RGB Software, software/driver for controllers or HOTAS, and more is crashing V Rising. Disable any tool or software you use and you’ll fix V Rising’s in-game crashes.
Disable Overclock
Overclocked GPU is one way to squeeze more performance out of it. However, it can make gaming an unstable experience like games will start crashing to the desktop. If you have overclocked your graphics card, it’s crashing V Rising. Revert it to its default GPU and Memory clocks to fix the in-game crashes.
Enable Debug Mode
While you haven’t overclocked your GPU, graphics cards from Nvidia AIB partners like Zotac or GIGABYTE are often factory-overclocked or have higher GPU and Memory clocks than reference models. It’s crashing V Rising to the desktop while playing. Enable the Debug Mode through the Nvidia Control Panel to fix the in-game crashes. It forces the Graphics card to use Nvidia’s recommended GPU and Memory clocks. Open the Nvidia Control Panel > Help > Debug Mode.
Increase Shader Cache Size
As I mentioned, V Rising runs on the Unity engine. Like the Unreal Engine, it also relies on shaders for its performance and visuals. The default shader cache size isn’t enough for V Rising, which crashes it to the desktop. Increase the shader cache size to fix in-game crashes.
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel
- Go to Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings
- Scroll down to Shader Cache
- Select 10 GB and apply the changes.
Limit Max Frame Rate
Playing V Rising at a high or unlocked frame rate like 120 FPS crashes it to the desktop. Playing it at a high FPS puts a lot of load on the GPU and CPU. Limit the game’s max frame rate to reduce the GPU and CPU load and it’ll fix V Rising’s in-game crashes.
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
- Click “Manage 3D Settings” and open the Program Settings tab.
- Select V Rising from the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down, enable Max Frame Rate, and set a value.
Note: Unless you use a Freesync or G.sync display, your Max Frame Limit should be 1/2, 1/3rd, or 1/4th of your monitor’s refresh rate. Otherwise, the game will feel jittery.
Disable In-game Overlays
In-game overlays are a common feature in gaming-related software like Discord or Steam. Even Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in in-game overlay in the form of Game Bar. In-game overlays are useful as they allow PC users to access certain features without quitting or minimizing the game. However, in-game overlays can interfere with games and crash them to the desktop. In-game overlays are crashing V Rising and disabling them will fix in-game crashes.
To disable Steam overlay, open Steam > settings > In-game > uncheck “Enable the Steam overlay while in-game.”
To disable GeForce Experience > click on the Great icon next to your username > General > turn off the “IN-GAME Overlay” options.
To disable Discord overlay, open User settings > go to the Game Overlay tab > turn off the “Enable In-game overlay” options.
Game Not Starting, Crash At Startup Fix
PC users report V Rising is crashing at startup or doesn’t launch. There are multiple reasons the game is crashing like the operating system. Ensure you are using at least Windows 10 64-bit as V Rising doesn’t support 32-bit or older versions of Windows OS. The following fixes will help you resolve V Rising’s crashes at startup.
Uninstall and Reinstall The Game
Uninstall V Rising, delete all config and related files, and then reinstall the game to fix the crashes at startup. Follow the steps below to fix V Rising’s crashes at startup.
- Delete the game
- Go to the Steam folder and navigate to steam library\steamapps\common and delete the VRising folder
- Navigate to C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp and delete the VRising folder
- Navigate to C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow and delete Stunlock Studios folder
- Restart your PC and install the game again.
Disable Anti-Virus
If you use a third-party anti-virus software like DeepGuard or F-Secure, it’s falsely detecting V Rising’s executable as malware and blocking it, which crashes the game at startup. You can fix the crashes at startup by disabling the real-time protection of your anti-virus or excluding the game folder from it, I recommend the latter. After that, verify the game files.
- Right-click V Rising in your Steam Library > Properties > Installed Files tab.
- Click the “Verify integrity of game files” button.
- Let Steam scan and download files.
Update or Install Visual C++ Components
Your PC is missing or has corrupt Visual C++ components, which are necessary to run games. Missing or corrupt Visual C++ Components are crashing Vrising. Install or repair Visual C++ Redistributables to fix V Rising’s crashes at startup.
- Open the Steam library and type ‘Steamworks’ in the search bar.
- Right-click “Steamworks Common Redistributables” > Manage > Browse local files.
- A new Explorer window will open.
- Go to _CommonRedist\vcredist
- There are folders with names in years starting from 2010.
- Open each folder and run the VC_redis, both x64 and x86 versions.
- Install or repair Visual C++ Redistributables and restart your PC.
Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
Fullscreen optimizations are enabled by default for every game or application installed on a Windows PC. Fullscreen Optimizations often crash games at startup, and V Rising is crashing because of it. Disable Fullscreen optimizations to fix V Rising’s crashes at startup.
- Right-click V Rising in Steam library > Manage > browse local files.
- A new Explorer window will open with game files.
- Right-click the executable > properties > Compatibility tab
- Check “Disable Fullscreen Optimizations” and apply.
- Launch V Rising and it won’t crash at launch.
Delete DirectX Shader Cache
The DirectX shader cache on your PC is corrupt or incompatible with V Rising. It’s crashing the game at startup. Delete the DirectX shader cache and a new one will be created the next time you launch the game. This fixes the V Rising’s crash at startup.
- Open Windows Settings
- Go to System > Storage > Temporary Files
- Select DirectX Shader Cache and click “Remove Files”
- Launch V Rising and it’ll work without crashing at startup.
