Elden Ring’s only expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has launched with a bang for PC and consoles. Aside from the fact that 62% of the players on Steam can’t play the expansion, those who can are finding the difficulty spike challenging. But that is not what you are here for, as Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is freezing and crashing on PC, and it seems to be a widespread issue on PC. Here I have compiled fixes that help PC users fix Shadow of the Erdtree’s freezes.
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Freezing Fixes That’ll Help
PC users report that with the rollout of Shadow of the Erdtree update, Elden Ring is freezing randomly while playing and then crashes to the desktop. The following fixes will help PC users resolve the Elden Ring freezing on their PCs. If you are experiencing other errors and crashes, see our complete fixes guide for Elden Ring.
Disable SSDPSRV Service
Windows SSDPSRV service is freezing Elden Ring. I fixed the freezing issue by disabling the SSDPSRV service. So, PC users must disable the service to fix the Elden Ring freezing on PC issue.
- Open Task Manager.
- Go to the Services tab.
- Find the “SSDPSRV” service from the list.
- Right-click SSDPSRV and stop it.
- Ply Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and it won’t freeze while playing.
Play in Offline Mode
Elden Ring is freezing on PC due to online mode. The game loads shaders or textures when the white phantoms appear in-game. Play the game in the offline mode and it won’t freeze and crash while playing.
Increase Shader Cache Size
The game is freezing because the default shader cache size isn’t enough. It has to load shaders and the limited size of the cache freezes and crashes Elden Ring. Increase the shader cache size to fix the Elden Rin’t freezing and crashing issue.
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
- Go to Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings.
- Find the “Shader cache size” option from the list.
- Select “10 GB” and apply the changes.
- Play Elden Ring and it won’t freeze and crash on PC.
Disable Steam Input
If you are using an Xbox controller on PC and Steam input is enabled, it is freezing Elden Ring. Since Windows enabled Xbox controller by default, Stema input confuses the game into thinking it’s another device. This conflict causes the game to freeze. Disable Steam input and the issue will be fixed.
- Right-click Elden Ring in your Steam library > Properties.
- Go to the Controller tab.
- Select “Disable Steam input” for ‘Override for Elden Ring’.
- Play Elden Ring and it won’t crash or freeze on PC.
Disable Gsync
PC users report that enabling Gsync is freezing the game. Disable G.sync and the issue will be fixed. Open Nvidia Control Panel > Setup G-Sync > Uncheck “Enable G-Sync, G-Sync Compatible”. Play Elden Ring and it won’t freeze or crash.
