Some AA And Indie Devs Say It’s Not Worth Putting Games On Xbox Without Game Pass Deal

Xbox’s Game Pass service has proven to be a double-edged sword in the gaming industry. Lauded for its consumer value, offering subscribers access to a vast library of games for a monthly fee, the service has inadvertently set a precedent that complicates publishing on Xbox for developers.

The expectation set by Microsoft’s successful subscription model has led to a challenging environment for indie and AA developers, where releasing games on Xbox without inclusion in Game Pass seems increasingly untenable.

According to Skill Up’s discussions with about a dozen AA and indie developers, the consensus points to a stark reality: the Xbox ecosystem, heavily influenced by Game Pass, has cultivated a consumer base that expects wide-ranging access as part of their subscription.

This expectation reduces the likelihood of games succeeding financially without the support of being featured in the Game Pass catalog.

“Edmond, a member of my team, he reached out to about a dozen game makers (AA and indie) to ask they how you feel about publishing the games on Xbox. And one of the things that came back from a few of those developers was the idea that it is not worth putting your game on Xbox without a Game Pass deal because Xbox consumers are essentially conditioned now to expect every game on Xbox Game Pass.”

This sentiment reflects a broader issue within the gaming industry, where subscription services, while providing great value to consumers, may also undervalue individual games.

For indie and smaller AA developers, whose resources and marketing reach are often limited, this can pose a significant barrier.

The challenge is not just about getting games onto Xbox but ensuring they can thrive in a market dominated by subscription-based consumption.

As of early 2024, Xbox Game Pass has reached a significant milestone with 34 million subscribers across all its tiers. This growth represents a substantial increase from the 25 million subscribers reported back in January 2022. This substantial subscriber base highlights the platform’s broad appeal and the success of its model in attracting and maintaining a large user base.
