Controlled Folder Access restricts access to the My Documents folder on your PC, which causes the Save error. Disable the Controlled Folder Access to fix Horizon Forbidden West’s save game error.
- Open Windows Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection.
- Click “Manage Ransomware Protection” under “Ransomware Protection”.
- Turn off “Controlled Folder Access”
- Play Horizon Forbidden West and you are now able to save your progress.
Run The Game As An Administrator

In this case, to fix the Save Error in Horizon Forbidden West, you need to change the paths to the user folders back to their defaults using the Windows Registry Editor tool. follow these steps:
- Press the Windows + R buttons
- Type regedit and press Enter
- Windows Registry Editor will open up.
- Navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders” path.
- You will find the path to the Documents Folder is “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”.
- Right-click the file that has the “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents” path
- click on Modify
- Change the path to C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents and press Ok
- Change it for every file that has OneDrive in its path.
- Navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders” path in Registry Editor.
- Find the file named “Personal” and the path to the Documents folder will again be “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”.
- Modify the path to “C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents” and press OK.
- Launch Horizon Forbidden West and Save error is fixed.
