Baldur’s Gate 3 Subclasses Guide: Abilities, Spells, Actions

Understanding Baldur’s Gate 3 subclasses is a key part of the game, especially, when you are trying to craft your perfect build. Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3 are secondary classifications which you can choose on top of your main character class. Baldur’s Gate 3 subclasses determine your character’s abilities, aptitudes, and what changes they get at higher levels. In this guide, we will discuss each subclass currently available in the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Subclasses Abilities, Aptitudes, and More

There are 6 main classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 and each main class has its own subclasses. The number of subclasses isn’t set in stone, some main classes have 6 while others have 4 subclasses.

Cleric Subclasses (Early Access)

  • Life Domain
  • Light Domain
  • Trickey

Life Domain

Life Domain is a Subclass for Cleric in Baldur’s Gate 3. Life Domain initially comes with heavy armor proficiency, the disciple of life, and domain spells. Life Domain also inherits some Cleric features such as spell slots, wisdom saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency. The following are the initial spells for Life Domain:

  • Bless
  • Cure Wounds

Light Domain

Another early access cleric subclass is Light Domain. The Light Domain gets Warding Flare and Domain Spells initially and inherits spell slots, wisdom saving throw proficiency, charisma saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency. The following are the initial cantrips and spells for Light Domain:

  • Light (Cantrip)
  • Faerie Fire (Domain Spell)
  • Burning Hands (Domain Spell)

Trickery Domain

Trickey Domain is the final cleric subclass available in early access. The initial Trickery Domain features include Blessing of the Trickster and Domain Spells. Trickery Domain inherits spell slots, wisdom saving throw proficiency, charisma saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency. The following are the initial actions and spells available to the Trickey Domain Cleric Subclass:

  • Blessing of the Trickster (Action)

Fighter Subclasses

  • Battle Master
  • Eldritch Knight

Battle Master

One of the two Fighter subclasses available in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Battle Master. The initial feature for this subclass is Superiority Dice 4. Meanwhile, the inherited class features strength saving throw proficiency, constitution saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, medium armor proficiency, heavy armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, martial weapon proficiency. Eldritch Knight is the second and final subclass for Fighter subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Knight gets 2 level 1 slot as its initial features. Eldritch Knight inherits strength saving throw proficiency, constitution saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, medium armor proficiency, heavy armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, martial weapon proficiency.

Beast Master

The Beast Master subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3. Initial Beast Master feature is “Summon Companion” and it inherits strength saving throw proficiency, dexterity saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, medium armor proficiency, heavy armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, martial weapon proficiency, 2 level 1 spell slots, 1 level 1 slot. Hunter

Hunter is the second and final subclass for Rangers in Baldur’s Gate 3. The initial Hunter features include Hunter’s Prey; you can choose from Giant Killer, Horde Breaker, and Colossus Slayer. The inherited Ranger features for Hunter are strength saving throw proficiency, dexterity saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, medium armor proficiency, heavy armor proficiency, shield proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, martial weapon proficiency, 2 level 1 spell slots, 1 level 1 slot. This class inherits dexterity saving throw proficiency, intelligence saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, hand crossbow proficiency, longsword proficiency, and shortsword proficiency.   • Sneak Attack (Melee) (Rogue lvl 1)

Arcane Trickster

Arcane Trickster gets spell slots and Mage Hand Legerdemain. Inherited Rogue features are dexterity saving throw proficiency, intelligence saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, simple weapon proficiency, hand crossbow proficiency, longsword proficiency, and shortsword proficiency. The following are the arcane trickster  inherited actions and spells:

  • Sneak Attack (Melee) (Rogue lvl 1)

The Fiend

The Fiend’s initial feature is Dark One’s Blessing and its inherited Warlock features are Warlock spell slots, wisdom saving throw proficiency, charisma saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, and simple weapon proficiency. The following are The Fiend’s initial spells and actions:

  • Pick 2 Level 1 Spells
  • Command (Halt)

The Great Old One

The Great Old One subclass gets no initial features and only inherits Warlock features including Warlock spell slots, wisdom saving throw proficiency, charisma saving throw proficiency, light armor proficiency, and simple weapon proficiency. Abjuration School gets Arcane Ward as its initial feature.
