Astarion, the High Elf Rogue, is one of the first companions you can recruit in Baldur’s Gate 3. His stealthy skills and charismatic personality make him a valuable addition to your party. Here’s a detailed guide on how to recruit Astarion and make the most of his abilities.
Astarion Location and Recruitment
After the prologue, you’ll find yourself on Ravaged Beach. To the west, Astarion will call for aid. As you approach, he will attempt to slit your throat. However, the mind flayer’s tadpole will connect the two of you, causing him to quickly apologize and offer to join your party.
When you meet Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll be presented with three dialogue options:
- “Easily. Stand back.” – Choosing this option will lead Astarion to attack you. However, you won’t have to deal with any checks to get his knife away from your throat.
- “Kill it yourself – you look capable enough.” – If you select this option, Astarion will attempt to ambush you and slit your throat. But don’t worry, it won’t come to that.
- “Leave.” – Selecting this option will also result in Astarion trying to ambush you.
Regardless of the option you choose, the tadpole will connect you two and clear up the misunderstanding. After the dialogue, you can decide whether to recruit Astarion into your group or part ways.

Astarion Romance and Approval
To gain Astarion’s approval, you should make decisions that align with his worldview. For instance, he appreciates selfish behavior and deception. He also reacts positively when you allow him to feed on the protagonist and enemies. Once you have a high approval rating with Astarion, you can even initiate a romance with him. What Happens To Astarion If You Don’t Recruit Him In ACT 1?
There is no clarity on what happens to Astraion but it is widely beleived that any companion you don’t recruit in ACT 1 will eventually die in ACT 2. Shadowheart is the only companion that can be recruited at various points of the game due to story reasons.
