AMD Ryzen 7000 series has been announced and will be hitting the shelves in around 3 weeks. Some reviewers have got their hands on the chips and have been posting their findings online. AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs can get very hot under load, which we pointed out before.
AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs Get Really Hot
One of the AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs was tested running AIDA64 and at stock settings, the chip got to 93.1C. The CPU was running a little above 5 GHz and the voltage was at 122W. This is not surprising keeping in mind the 5nm process means that the CPU is denser even if it is smaller. The heatspreader this time around also covers a smaller area which makes dissipating heat challenging.
Interestingly though, manually undervolting the CPU to 67.9W resulted in the same 5 GHz clock speed but this time the temperature only hit 67.9C, which is very reasonable.
This could be a BIOS issue and might be resolved at launch but there is no way of knowing for sure at the time of writing. We do not even know which exact model this is. It could be the AMD Ryzen 7700X if we were to take a guess but there is no way of knowing for sure.
It is worth mentioning that a stable 5 GHz clock speed at 67W is very impressive indeed. With that said, if this is not a BIOS issue then consumers are going to need decent coolers in order to keep these CPUs running properly. If this is a BIOS issue then I hope that it can be fixed before launch.
Let us know what you think about the upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs and whether or not you are interested in upgrading.
