AMD has unveiled the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which stands for Golden Rabbit Edition, corresponding to the 12 Zodiac signs, at China Joy in Shanghai. This will replace the Radeon 6800 XT and is faster than the Nvidia RTX 4070. The price of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE starts at $649. Here is everything that you need to know about the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE Specifications
The 7900 GRE seems like a cut-down version of the 7900 XT with 80 CUs and 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It features AMD’s Navi31 XL GPU with a slower clock speed (2245 MHz) and narrower bandwidth (256-bit, 576 GB/s) compared to the 7900 XT. Furthermore, it features 80 Ray Accelerators, 160 AI Accelerators, and 5120 Stream Processors. The Stream Processors handle rasterization, Ray Accelerators handle ray tracing and the AI Processors enable AI image upscaling technology.
The following is a complete breakdown of the specifications of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE compared to the previous generation Radeon 6800 XT.
Specifications | RX 6800 XT | RX 7900 GRE |
---|---|---|
Ray Accelerators | 72 (1st Gen) | 80 (2nd Gen) |
AI Accelerators | None | 160 |
Stream Processors | 4608 | 5120 |
Game Clock Speed | 2015 MHz | 1880 MHz |
Boost Clock | 2250 MHz | 2245 MHz |
Memory | 16GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 |
Memory Speed | 16 Gbps | 18 Gbps |
Memory Bus | 256-Bit | 256-Bit |
AMD infinite Cache | 128 MB (1st Gen) | 64 MB (2nd Gen) |
Total Board Power | 300W | 260W |
AV1 HW. Encoding | No | Yes |
So you can see that the &900 GRE has more Ray Accelerators, AI Accelerators, Stream Processors, and about the same boost clock speed. It has the same VRAM amount but it runs faster and the card consumes less power. The infinity cash is lower but it has been upgraded. The addition of AV1 hardware encoding is also a major plus point, which was missing on the previous generation graphics card.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE Performance
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE targets 1440p gaming but it can also run games at 4K is you are willing to turn down some settings or the game isn’t very demanding such as Genshin Impact or League of Legends. ExpressReview tested the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE and revealed that the graphics card performs better than the Nvidia RTX 4070.
According to the numbers the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is 14% faster than the 6800 XT but it should be compared with the 6900 XT because of its name. I can see how this could get a bit confusing for some consumers. AMD’s internal testing is also very optimistic and the company has posted the following numbers at 1440p using max settings.
Games | Average FPS |
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 | 136 |
Dead Island 2 | 154 |
Company of Heroes 3 | 184 |
Cyberpunk 2077 | 94 |
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor | 81 |
Forspoken (Raytracing) | 72 |
Dead Space (Raytracing) | 76 |
Resident Evil 4 (Raytracing) | 106 |
The Callisto Protocol (Raytracing) | 65 |
Returnal (Raytracing) | 72 |
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE does post some impressive numbers but it is safe to assume that NVidia is going to have the upper hand when it comes to AI image upscaling and ray tracing. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE on the other hand is very compelling when it comes to rasterization performance.
Pricing And Availablity
The MSRP of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is 649 USD but you can expect higher prices for the AIB partner cards. This makes it more expensive than some RTX 4070 variants that you can buy right now but then again it does offer better performance. The GIGABYTE WINDFORCE GeForce RTX 4070 can be purchased for 600 USD a the time of writing but the higher-end ASUS TUF 4070 OC variant will set you back 680 USD.
The card has officially been launched in China and a global release is planned.
