Constitution is one of the six key abilities that shape a character’s physical and mental characteristics in Baldur’s Gate 3. This attribute is a reflection of a character’s stamina and physical endurance.
The primary role of Constitution in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to influence your character’s maximum Hit Points. The higher your Constitution score, the more Hit Points you will have. For instance, if your Constitution modifier is +1, you will gain an additional Hit Point for each character level. Similarly, a Constitution modifier of +2 will grant you an extra 2 Hit Points per character level. This bonus is applied retroactively, meaning it takes into account your character’s past levels as well.
In the early build Baldur’s Gate 3, the level cap was set at 5, which made Constitution a less appealing attribute for early builds. However, with the full game’s expanded level cap, Constitution has become more valuable.
Constitution And Barbarians
While Constitution is a beneficial attribute for all characters due to its impact on Hit Points, it holds special significance for Barbarians. Barbarians can add their Constitution modifier to their Armor Class, potentially allowing them to forego Dexterity entirely. However, doubling up on both Dexterity and Constitution can provide additional benefits.
While Constitution is a valuable attribute, it does not have any related skills, and aside from boosting your Constitution Saving Throw and the Barbarian’s Armor Class, it does not provide any other direct benefits.
However, the increase in Hit Points it provides makes it worthwhile to invest a few points into Constitution if you have any to spare. Most characters will find a Constitution score of 12 or 14 sufficient, with Barbarians potentially willing to invest more heavily in this attribute.
Constitution Score and Modifier
The Constitution score also influences the character’s hit points, which represent their health and stamina. A higher Constitution score means more hit points, and thus a greater ability to withstand injury and fatigue.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, when a Constitution check is required, the game will roll a 20-sided die (d20) and add the character’s Constitution modifier. The result is then compared to a difficulty class (DC) set by the game. If the result equals or exceeds the DC, the check is successful.
Remember, the Constitution modifier is based on the character’s Constitution score, and it increases as the score increases. Therefore, characters with a high Constitution score are more likely to succeed on Constitution checks.
