Purple Worm Toxin deals poison damage to enemies in BG3. It is a Very Rare Consumable that can be applied to weapons or thrown at enemies to deal poison damage. But while it is a powerful potion it is also hard to get. You need to find and craft its recipe and then go after the Corpse Rose locations in Baldur’s Gate 3.
BG3: How to Make Thisobald Thorm’s Poison
Travel to the Shadow-Cursed Lands and find the Waning Moon Bar. Look for Thisobald Thorm inside who is guarding a large metal door that leads to his old lab; the lab has the recipe we need to make Purple Worm Toxin.
You have two options to obtain the key from Thisobald Thorm:
- Combat: Defeat Thisobald Thorm in battle.
- Outdrink him: You can outdrink him while listening to his tales. He’ll eventually die from drinking too much.
- Stealth: Pickpocket the key from him if you prefer a stealthy approach.
Use the key to open the door to Thisobald’s laboratory. Inside, locate the book to the left of the entrance.
Read the book and pass an Investigation check (Difficulty Class 14) to obtain the recipe for Purple Worm Toxin. If you fail the check, you can retry with different characters.
Best Option is to OutdrinkThisobald Thorm
Approach Thisobald Thorm and engage in conversation near the bar. He will challenge you to a drinking contest, where you need to drink three times and tell him stories of your adventures.
You need to pass three Constitution checks with escalating difficulty:
- First drink: DC 14
- Second drink: DC 16
- Third drink: DC 18
After each drink, Thisobald will ask you to recount a tale from your adventures. The stories you can tell and their associated Performance checks are:
First Drink:
“From aboard a Mind Flayer Vessel, I’ve witnessed the hells themselves.” (DC 21)
“I gazed on nature’s bounties in a verdant grove of druids.” (DC 18)
“I’ve seen the goblins’ vile rituals with my own eyes.” (DC 18)
“A silver-tongued devil bade me feast in his lavishly appointed banquet hall.” (DC 18)
“I explored a lost fortress buried in the Underdark’s bowels.” (DC 16)
The easiest option is the story of exploring the Selunite Outpost in the Underdark or the Arcane Tower, both requiring a DC 16 check.
Second Drink:
“I ripped apart winged imps spawned from the fires of Avernus.” (DC 21)
“I conquered infamous hobgoblin Dror Ragzlin and his minions.” (DC 18)
“I slayed a hideous, pustule-ridden hag. She died a gruesome death.” (DC 16)
“A towering creature rose from molten lava. I felled it with great wit and might.” (DC 16)
“I bested an inquisitor – a dreaded champion of the Lich Queen, Vlaakith.” (DC 16)
Choose the easiest options, like defeating Auntie Ethel, the Lava Elemental, or the Inquisitor, each requiring a DC 16 check.
If you fail a Performance check, you must pass a Deception check (DC 18) to fabricate a convincing story.
After the third drink, Thisobald will disclose that the key to Ketheric’s immortality is in the Thorm mausoleum before dying. Loot his body for the key to the backdoor, enabling you to access his laboratory and steal his possessions, including the Punch-Drunk Bastard weapon.
Utilizing Shadowheart‘s Enhance Ability spell to gain advantage or Guidance for a bonus on these checks is highly recommended to ensure success.
Corpse Rose Petal Locations
To craft Purple Worm Toxin, you’ll need three Corpse Rose Petals.
Location #1: Travel to the north of the Road to Baldur’s Gate portal in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Look for a stable mentioned in Thisobald’s notes about a shipment of roses. Any character close enough will roll a survival check to spot the box of Corpse Roses. Reload if necessary until you pass the check.
Location #2: Head to the docks north of the Great Mausoleum. Move to the hidden entrance and search near the bodies and caskets for Corpse Roses.
